NWFA Wood Floor of the Year — Parquetry

About Elite Flooring Designs

Elite Flooring Designs is a parquetry shop. The work here is drawn, cut and fitted by hand, one commission at a time, and it has been judged against the best of it in the country.

The award

NWFA Wood Floor of the Year, Parquetry category

The National Wood Flooring Association runs an annual competition judged on design, technical execution and degree of difficulty. Our entry took the Parquetry category: a full-room geometric field of interlocking squares and diamonds, closed by a sawtooth band and a dark outer border, meeting the surrounding plank floor at a clean line.

The reason this matters to a client is narrower than a trophy. Category judging looks closely at joints, at how a pattern resolves at the walls, and at whether the difficulty was necessary or decorative. Those are the same questions worth asking about any floor being quoted.

The craft

Drawn first, cut second

Parquetry has a fixed sequence, and skipping any part of it shows up later in the floor. The pattern is drawn into the actual room, at scale, against the actual dimensions. Species are chosen for how their contrast survives finishing and daylight. Pieces are cut and assembled dry on the bench, so every miter is proven before glue touches it. Only then does anything go down.

The work that follows is mostly patience. A compass rose has hundreds of edges that all have to close, and a border of diamonds has to arrive at the corner in rhythm. There is no stage where speed improves the outcome.

Range

What comes out of the shop

Medallions in walnut and maple. Star parquetry in padauk and hard maple over hickory. Diamond-chain borders in oak. Ebonized oak floors that carry up the staircase. Oak stairs set with iron balusters. Marble mosaic medallions cut into travertine. A walnut floor that meets stone along an S-curve, scribed on both sides so the joint runs flush.

Restoration belongs on that list too. Historic floors get taken back to sound wood and refinished with their original character intact, which is a different discipline from laying new material and is worth naming separately.

Two names

Elite and AG Floor Covering

The same hands run AG Floor Covering in Spokane, where the work is installation, sanding and restoration for homes across the Inland Northwest. Elite exists for the commissions that start with a drawing instead of a square-foot count.

Commissions

Bring us a room

Commissions start with a conversation about the space, the light and what you want people to notice when they walk in. That is a good first email.
